Although separate from adult corrections, the juvenile system is linked to it at many points, particularly in their methods of operation. What sets the juvenile corrections system apart is differences in philosophy, procedures, and programmatic emphasis due to the different social and cultural challenges presented by the youth population. The philosophy of juvenile corrections places a higher premium on rehabilitation and prevention as opposed to punishment.
For this assignment, you will accomplish the following tasks.
- Select one adult correctional system within the United States to compare and contrast with what you have learned about juvenile corrections. Explain what rehabilitation programs, if applicable, are offered in juvenile facilities that may not necessarily be offered in adult facilities.
- Describe the effectiveness of corrections in addressing the nature and extent of youth crime today.
- Analyze the history and the development of juvenile corrections.
- Assess the future of juvenile corrections. Note any trends or emerging rehabilitation programs.
Your essay must be at least two pages in length with an introduction. The reference page does not count towards the total page requirement. Include at least three sources from within the last five years to support your essay. Adhere to APA Style when creating references for this assignment. APA formatting, however, is not necessary.
