1. Choose one of the paintings above: Brunias’ Free Women of Color and Their Servants or Jean-Leon Gerome’s Slave Market.
  2. Using the internet, investigate the work of art. Search for different analyses of these works, particularly of their colonial themes and meanings. These can be articles, analyses found on museum pages, or amateur analyses. Find at least three (3) sources.
  3. Explain the analysis/criticisms of these three sources, their important arguments and conclusions:
    1.  What does each of your sources think the painting means?
    2. What ideologies do they think the paintings convey?
    3. What, if any, are the controversies surrounding these paintings?
    4. This section should be at least 2 page long.
    5. This section absolutely MUST include citations/quotes from your online sources. You should have at least one quote from each source that you consult that conveys their main point and provides evidence for the conclusions you have drawn (In other words, your quotes from your online sources should prove that they are saying what you claim they are saying).
  4. Finally, perform your own post-colonial analysis of the painting you have chosen, paying particular attention to the themes of colonialism and the ideologies of the paintings. In particular, you want to think about the following questions:
    1. How have these European artists conceptualized the peoples and places they depict?
    2. Do these paintings suggest moral judgments about the people and places they depict?
    3. What do these paintings suggest about the values and the society that they come from?
    4. Do these paintings suggest fears or concerns about the peoples and places they depict?
    5. Other thoughts and analysis. Don’t be afraid to use your imagination or to employ methods of analysis used throughout this unit.
    6. Your analysis should be 1.5-2 pages long.

Essay:

    2. The painting. The painting should occupy the second page of your essay. (It doesn’t have to take up the whole page, but the painting, along with its title and artist, should be the only thing on the page). Under the painting/visual art, you must include the title and name of the artist.
    3. Your analysis of your online sources. This should be refined and edited with correct grammar and syntax.
    4. Your analysis of the work you have chosen.
