We will continue to pursue the questions we began last week, among these are:

In what ways are the popular conceptions of poetry and poets different from what you are beginning to discover about actual poems and the poets who write them?

This week, we are reading and thinking about poetry written during any time period and any place as essentially the same sort of thing.

We are reading poems “ahistorically,” meaning outside of history or beyond it. This opens us to a wide range of issues. Later, in the semester we’ll consider more closely and specifically the historical time periods and literary movements that influence poets and their poems.

Consider the following in your discussion posts:

  • So no matter what time period it was written in, what makes it a poem? what about the poem travels well across time? and what does not?
  • Is the language difficult? if you need to look up words, share your definitions in the discussion when you post about the poem. This will help us all out.  As we did in week #1, keep considering what a poem actually is and the elements or craft that goes into creating a poem.

And, as always, I invite you to just respond as a reader to the poems/lectures:

  • What does the poem make you think about or feel?
  • What seems confusing or mysterious? what strikes you about the poem as a whole, or about a particular line, image, sound, color, theme, etc?
  • What do you enjoy or appreciate about the poem?
  • Did you find something especially interesting, intriguing, or baffling about a lecture topic? Share your interests or ask a question if something is confusing in a lecture.
Attached is the poem.
