This week you are split into your project groups for discussion. In your project groups this week I want you to start brainstorming ideas about health policies that you could investigate for your policy project. You may have already started doing so, but give me a glimpse into where you are at through your discussion board.
- What health issues are you most concerned about related to the overuse of technology or underutilization of natural spaces?
- What populations are you most concerned about regarding the issues you are discussing?
- At what level do you want to address this issue (e.g., national, organizational, community, individual, etc.)?
- What sort of behaviors do you want to change?
Kendra Babitz gave some examples of what she called “problem statements” – I would call those “policy statements” because she included solutions in those statements as well. As you brainstorm with your group, try to emulate those statements:
- Clearly state the problem (which includes who is the target population);
- why it matters;
- and what is a potential solution.
Throw out ideas to your groupmates and have a discussion – and try to settle on a broad topic that interests your group, even if you don’t end up using one of the specific problem statements you craft in this discussion. Post your own problem/policy statement by Thursday, and then be sure to respond to your peers by Sunday.
Have someone from your group send me a message with the topic your group is considering – it doesn’t have to be your final decision, so you can change you mind if you decide to go in a different direction, but I want to get a sense of where everyone is at by the end of the weekend.
