For the week 8 discussion, I chose option three.

Option 3: Choose a work of art from any genre that depicts or tells the story of a real-life event from any time period

The painting I chose to discuss is “Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh in 1889 (Martin & Jacobus).  Van Gogh painted Starry Night when he spent his time at a hospital asylum of Saint Paul de Mausole. Van Gogh lived in this hospital quite well and was given a lot more freedom and privileges than other patients staying there. He was allowed to leave the hospital as well as read and paint in his room. Van Gogh was diagnosed with epileptic fits and at one point was recovering. He had a sudden relapse and started getting hallucinations and thoughts of suicide. Starry Nights were painted in his room from a view out of his bedroom window. This painting was painted in his depression era. The painting explains the wonderful dark colors of blues with blending hills into the sky. The painting has a village that lies at the base with browns, greys, and also blues. The stars and moon are what grab attention from the audience towards the painting (Van Gogh Gallery, n.d.). Starry Nights painting is noticed all over the world. One can find this painting on coffee mugs, magnets, and t-shirts, etc. It has been said that this famous painting has exceeded its creator. Starry Night is a testament to how people envision its timeless beauty (Van Gogh Gallery, n.d.).
