Final Exam Essays I choose # 2
For the exam you are required to complete both of the following two essays. Your work should be at least four pages of discussion (as much length as needed to write your best work is strongly encouraged), that should contain no outside sources at all. None. Only use our two textbooks are needed and the film that we viewed in class- The Seventh Seal. You must use at least 8 sources (including at least 4 primary sources)( primary sources are examles) in each of your discussions. In the film 7th Seal youll find out who they consider as the “Others”….Coverage should include at least some work with chapters 5-12. Each essay should offer 4 plus pages of well-organized discussion. The work must be clear enough that another Professor outside of the field can follow your presentation of ideas and evidence. And finally, do not retell sources or contexts, use them to build your discussion and support your fully developed conclusions.

ESSAY TWO: Use multiple primary sources and several chapters of our textbook to discuss several examples of the theme us versus them (othering) within Western Civilization. For example: you might focus on the history of major religious differences such as Eastern Orthodox, Western Christianity, and Islam; and/or social differences among men, women and differing classes (peasants/clergy/nobles etc.); and/or Europeans and non-Europeans including peoples of the New World. Again, your essay need not be restricted to these examples. Again, for our purposes, with this essay option, we are thinking about ways in which “others” appeared within European history covered from the period between circa 400 and 1500 (5-12). Student work with this material has emphasized relations and groups, often revealing relationships of power, including Christians vs. Muslims, Christians vs. Jews, Men vs. Women, and the rich and powerful vs. the peasants.
