Assessment
An extended abstract is a research paper whose ideas and significance can be understood in a
brief summary: approximately 3-5 pages. An extended abstract will contain the same elements as
a research paper abstract, but is usually much shorter than a full research paper. You will prepare
your own extended abstract as the end-of-term assignment for Research Design.
You must develop 2-3 hypotheses (or research questions if necessary). These hypotheses must be
clear and well-written (i.e., if the instructor has recommended you revise your hypotheses, you
must follow the recommendations accordingly).
1. Introduction (about 2-3 pages, 12 points)
The purpose of the introduction is to grab your readers attention and to build a context for your
project.
a. You should start by outlining a research problem that your research will address in some way.
When reviewing existing literature, you should first answer the question What do we already
know? In other words, what patterns have emerged in the current literature? (4 points)
b. You should build up to the hypotheses by briefly summarizing your arguments rooted in a
theory relevant to your research problem. This section should outline the logic behind your
hypotheses in an intuitive way. (4 points)
c. Next, you should answer the question What do we want to know? You will clearly state the
goal of the current study while making an argument that your topic is interesting, relevant, and
important. Your arguments should be concise and straightforward. (2 points)
d. Conclude the introduction with your studys hypotheses. These hypotheses should be
developed in consultation with your professor. (2 points)
Method (1 page, 6 points)
You should highlight your sampling methods (who is your sample and how will you recruit
them?), study design (survey, experiment, etc.), and procedure (if it is an experiment, what will
you manipulate? If it is a survey, what will you measure?). Remember that you should rely on
existing measures where possible.
Findings (about 1 page, 10 points)
Given the brevity of this course, you will work with publicly available data or data fabricated by
the professor. You must then interpret and report on your studys findings. State which statistical
tests were used (e.g., Using a linear regression, we found that). If you are investigating
group differences, you should indicate whether those differences were statistically significant,
and only if they are significant, indicate what those differences are. If you are investigating
relationships, you should indicate whether those relationships are significant, and only if they are
significant, the directionality of the relationships. (6 points)
Using non-statistical language, very briefly summarize your findings for a general audience. (4
points)
References (2 points)
You must prepare a list of references in APA 6 th edition including all citations you used in your
paper.
