Read the following case study.

Background: Research can present numerous dilemmas for the researcher. Too much information or too little information can be problematic. In addition, the hypothesis or the educated guess can conflict with the conclusion observed in a way that might present the opposite result expected. Thus, determining the research path must involve having an open mind as well as the ability to effectively analyze and synthesize data in a meaningful way.

Task: You are a candidate for a promotion in your organization. The hiring authority is asking each candidate to submit a report to evaluate research and professional communication abilities. The task is to identify an issue within the organization and prepare a Case Study report thus evaluating your ability to identify a problem, conduct research, and communicate recommendations to solve the problem. After being excited about the opportunity, you sit down and start developing some ideas.

Before any research can begin, you will need to ask permission. Prepare a memo to the owner of your company with your proposal. Respond to the following questions in your memo.

  1. What topic have you selected and why?
  2. How will you provide the appropriate amount of evidence for making logical changes?
  3. What are ways to present evidence the organization may not want to hear in a tactful, practical way?
  4. How can you assess and synthesize the data in a meaningful way to avoid being ignored or blamed for not conducting a proper analysis?

Submit your one-page (min. 275 word) memo requesting permission from your organization to conduct research and why.
