One alternative therapy that is of interest to me is the use of neurofeedback and micro current neurofeedback (MCN) for the treatment of anxiety, depression, traumatic brain injury (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorder PTSD), attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and substance abuse. Neurofeedback is the training of brainwaves to optimize brain function. The therapy uses electrodes on the scalp to measure brainwave activity. When a less-than-optimal brain wave is identified, the client is taught to train their brain to produce the desired brainwaves (Psychology Today, 2021). Studies suggest that this type of treatment is helpful in treating a variety of neurological conditions with nearly 60% of participants showing positive slopes in brainwave activity (Predictors of real-time fMRI neurofeedback performance and improvement A machine learning mega-analysis, 2021). Micro current neurofeedback (MCN) is like traditional neurofeedback, but claims to produce faster results with fewer sessions, and does not require conscious effort on the part of the patient. Foot zoning is a form of reflexology that claims to elevate energy, establish holistic balance, and aid the body in self-healing. The process involves using the bodys meridians which all have a connection to the foot. By applying pressure to certain areas along these energy pathways, foot zoning can reduce pain and release trapped energy. More information can be found at

When researching the various methods, I stumbled upon Ayurveda, something I was not too familiar with, so I decided to do some research on this holistic type of preventative care.  The term Ayurveda is derived from the Sanskrit words ayur (life) and veda (science or knowledge).  Based on the idea that disease is due to an imbalance or stress in a persons consciousness, Ayurveda encourages certain lifestyle interventions and natural therapies to regain balance between mind, body, spirit, and the environment (John Hopkins Medicine, 2022).  I found this fascinating, especially since I had not previously heard of it.  Essentially what I gathered is that it is a cleansing process which emphasizes good health and prevention/treatment of illness via lifestyle practices such as yoga, meditation, massage, and diet/supplements (meats, metals, plants, and minerals).  According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative health, in measuring the effectiveness of Ayurveda, some studies have shown that preparations have reduced symptoms associated with osteoarthritis and diabetes, however more research is needed since the trials were either too small or not well designed (2018).
