Discussion Post 1

After reviewing this module, I learned more in depth of the 3 energy systems our bodies go through in order to make energy/ATP. This is essential for us to know as dietitians because we need to understand the mechanisms of each macronutrient and importance to our bodies for these athletes to perform at their best. This lecture was a nice refresher of the energy metabolism pathways as I haven’t really studied this material since undergrad. I believe it is very important to understand the different exercises use different energy systems. I also believe knowing which macronutrients do what in the body will help us as future dietitians to understand what the athlete will need. For example, carbohydrates are very important as we learned they are the only source of fuel and energy for our bodies when performing these quick bursts of energy during exercices. We want to ensure athletes are getting enough carbohydrates in the diet to make sure they are not dipping into fat or protein for energy. Speaking of protein, protein is also very important as it makes lean muscle mass for our bodies. This is very important for athletes as they need lean muscle to perform a lot of their activities for strength. As a dietitian, I will want to prioritize protein intake to be enough for these athletes.

I think human metabolism is incredibly fascinating. I am in awe at how complex and fine-tuned the processes are that allow us to live and stay healthy. It is crazy to think how many trials and errors must have taken place over evolutionary time to get us to where the human body is today. Relating more specifically to nutrition, I think it is equally interesting to understand how what we put into our body can dramatically affect how we feel and how we perform. I agree with the course design and the book that understanding energy metabolism is essential for anyone learning about nutrition, not just relating to sport. You have to understand how the engine works if you want to fuel it correctly, especially if your goal is to optimize specific metabolic pathways for specific performance.

There are many benefits for a sports nutritionist to have a clear understanding of energy metabolism. Understanding how the body will use what is put into it develops a good foundation for creating nutrition plans. It also allows for targeting the specific needs of different sports. Understanding both the energy systems and how they are fueled enables the nutritionist to develop solutions for athletes experiencing energy level issues. Also, the more you understand how everything works, the easier you can explain it to potential athletes, ultimately creating more buy-in to your plans.  In my experience, most athletes want to understand why things need to be done a certain way instead of just being told what to do. When they understand how their performance can improve, most are eager to do what they need to do.
