While Bronfenbrenner would agree with the statement, he might argue that our concept of environment is far too narrow. His idea of the ecological model that considers the multi-faceted nature of environmental influence in a dynamic ecosystem is currently very influential in developmental research.
Consider Bronfenbrenner’s model of the ecosystem effecting development and the conversation that you had in your small groups regarding the things necessary for healthy development. Take Bronfenbrenner’s model and fit the ideas discussed in your group into that model and talk about how different aspects of these factors can be achieved and how the different layers work together to create a healthy pathway. In addition, have a conversation with someone you know about their memories of what it was like to be a child growing up for them in terms of family, school, and community. Do not ask them to share information that may be too private but focus instead on general experiences and do not identify them by name or relationship in your paper. Listen carefully and construct what their ecosystem would include using the layers of Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model and how their experience correspond or are different from what you discussed in class.
In terms of organization, write a discussion of the model, beginning with a description of it. Discuss each layer in turn in light of experiences they discuss. Speculate on how different layers may be different from your experiences. For example, the microsystem contains the parents. How would you describe the typical parenting experience of someone in your age group? How is that different from the experiences of the person you talk to? How do parents interact with other components of the microsystem (e.g., schools) within the mesosystem?
