Read Colossians 1:13-120
(The book of Colossians is a book found in the New Testament. I am asking you to read chapter 1 verses 13 20)
If faith is a relationship with God, what having faith means is determined by how one understands who God is. Now most people, believer and unbelievers alike, have some idea as to what is meant when one uses the term “God.” So we need to think carefully about what this term refers to. In many religious traditions, God is defined as a mystery that cannot ever be reduced to human concepts. In the Judeo-Christian tradition, we hold that God cannot be reduced to a set of ideas or concepts, but we can know him since he acts in history to make himself known. Actually, we will see that God is a divine person who acts to create all things and acts in history – in his covenant – to redeem all things. But what is a divine person? What does the Bible say about God? This will be a major theme in the course. So we begin with an early credal statement from Colossians.
Writing Assignment:
First write a reflection as to what you think the reading from Colossians says. It does not need to be definitive. (We will return to this text from time to time.) According to this text who is Christ? Identify the three most important points that the text tells you about who Christ is and why they are important. What does it mean to say that Christ is Head of the Church? What two points does Bishop Baron make about Christ that fits with what you see in the reading from Colossians?
