Reaction Paper: 2 1/2-3 pages, due Sunday, 11:59 PM (1/9. Please respond to both questions incorporating this week’s materialUse citations (author and page number) in the body of the assignment, with a reference page at the end. Pay attention to grammar and spelling. In responding indicate which question you are responding to, and restate each part of the question as you answer so it is clear where each response begins and ends.
*I am looking for students to go beyond just restating the information. I would like to see a critical analysis of the ideas put forth in the week’s materials*
1)
  • Discuss the case of Margery Kempe in terms of her religious beliefs and her religious preoccupations?
  • How did people appear to explain “Madness” in those times?
  • What range of responses did she get from the  religious leaders of that time period?
  • How did they explain her religious experience?
  •  How did her family and others react to and make sense of her issues?
  • How did they respond to her?
  • What treatments were provided for her? Were they helpful or harmful?
  • How do you believe she would have been assessed and treated today?
  • Is there a place for religion and spirituality in the treatment of those with mental health issues, pros/cons?
  • What would you do if you encountered someone today with some of the same beliefs as Margery Kempe?
2)
  • Provide a brief history of the private madhouse in England.
  • Why were they so plentiful?
  • How could one be committed to one, as in the case of Alexander Cruden? What factors seemed to influence who was committed to them and who was not?
  • What was Alex Crudens nickname, and what was his major accomplishment for which he is still remembered today? (Voice Cloud Recording)
  • According to Cruden, how did he come to be in the Madhouse? What does Professor Houston tell us regarding the reasons for Cruden’s commitments?
  • Some clinicians looking back, believe Cruden may have been on the autism spectrum, what are your thoughts regarding this?
  • Were these mad houses licensed and inspected? Were there any laws governing grievances or abuses that occurred in them?
  • How did people usually come to be released from them? (What was the discharge process?)
  • Just venturing a guess, how do you believe the private Madhouses of the 17th and 18th century compare to the Boarding Homes/Board and Care Homes/and Adult Homes of today (where many of those with mental health issues still reside)?
