World War 1 was a global crisis. Not only did it touch almost every area of the world, it occurred on the scale it did because of the network of global connections in place in the first decades of the twentieth century—connections that it both strengthened and strained. Using the Grayzel, Diallo, and Senghor readings, please write a four to five page paper that responds to the following prompts:
- Using the Grayzel text, explain how and why World War I was a global crisis. How and why did it affect people and places around the world? Choose at least three documents to support your points.
- Briefly summarize Diallo’s account of World War I, focusing not only on events but also the way he talks about the war (feelings, attitude, tone, etc.). Is his view generally positive or negative (or both)? What feelings does he have about the connection between France/Europe and Senegal/Africa? How does World War I fit into Diallo’s perception of European-African connections?
- Briefly summarize Senghor’s account of World War I, focusing not only on events but also the way he talks about the war (feelings, attitude, tone, etc.). Is his view generally positive or negative (or both)? What feelings does he have about the connection between France/Europe and Senegal/Africa? How does World War I fit into Senghor’s perception of European-African connections?
- Using the documents in the Grayzel text and Diallo and Senghor’s accounts, show how World War I both strengthened and strained global connections. In what ways did pre-existing connections become stronger as a result of the war? In what way were connections challenged or made weaker?
Your paper should be organized as a standard essay, with an introduction (with a thesis statement), body paragraphs using evidence to support the thesis, and a conclusion.
