Camera Set-Up:

• • Shooting Mode: Shutter Priority or S (Nikon) or “TV” (Canon). 
  • Set the Shutter to 1/1000
  • ISO Setting: 400 (Can be raised if needed to maintain the 1/1000 shutter speed if you run into overcast outdoor conditions).
  • Camera Filetype/Size: Large JPG file format.
  • Focus Mode: (Focus Tracking) AI, AI Servo, or Manual (if you would like).
  • White Balance: Auto.
  • Picture Style: Standard

Skill Points:

• Exploring the use of shutter speed as a creative tool.
• Learning what visual elements create a focal point.
• Developing an eye for placing focal points within a composition.

• Procedure:

  • • Shoot outdoors on a sunny day preferably.
    • Find a place with a lot of action like the bike path, beach volleyball, kids on swings, or outdoor athletic events.
    • Use whichever focal length creates good framing of the subject/action.
    • Be ready to anticipate the subject moving into your frame or follow them in your frame until the action hits its peak. Practice Be patient.
    • You choose the subject. Running, jumping, dogs in mid-air catching Frisbees, your choice, but make sure you choose very fast-moving subjects.
    • Look for the peak of action. People in mid-air, basketball jump shot, spiking a volleyball, crashing waves, etc.
    • Be sure to shoot a variety of subjects, not just the same one over and over.
    • No people walking with baby strollers or bikes cruising slowly on the bike path, no cats indoors.
    • The goal is to FREEZE fast-moving subjects.
    • NO CARS on the street or freeway !!!!!!! Cars in the air is a different matter.
    • NO SLOW-MOVING SUBJECTS. FAST-MOVING SUBJECTS ONLY.
