This story has been called the “greatest short story ever told,” and with good reason. This parable sums up the character of God. We can see how God acts toward those who have turned their backs on Him.
Max Lucado, in his book When God Whispers Your Name, talks about his young daughter. She is 4 years old. They are in his bedroom, and she is standing on the bed.
She says, “More, daddy, more.”
“Are you sure?” The father dramatically backs up, confessing adoration for her courage.
“Yes,” she squeals, “more, more.” So again, the father moves backwards.
“There,” she yells, “STOP!!”
She is superman without a cape, skydiver without a chute, only her heart flies higher than her body. And so she jumps. In that airborne instant, her only hope is her father. If he proves too weak, she will tumble to the floor. Too cruel, she will crash and burn. Too forgetful, and squash.
But, such a fear she does not know. Four years under the same roof have proved to her that her daddy is reliable. He is not superhuman, but he is strong and smart enough to catch his child as she jumps from the bed.
And so she flies. And they rejoice together at the marriage of love and trust.
The girl’s older sister is in the room. Dad asks if the young child will jump to her sister,
“No!” the child says firmly. “I only jump into big arms.”
This story exhibits the strength and security of a father.
I pray that as we continue along on this journey together, you are trusting in the strength and security of our Father this day, and throughout this week as we work, knowing that He will always be right there, waiting to catch us in His arms.
