The content will include a balanced discussion of both sides of the issue. You need to at least reference one interest group and politician on each side of the debate and briefly discuss their goals and strategies to forward their agenda. The discussion will conclude with your objective answer on what should happen and what is likely to happen, based on your research of Texas politics and your critical analysis of the issue, the groups and the politicians.
Structure: The paper must be structured properly with a clear introduction (including your thesis question), body (including a pro argument section and a con argument section) and conclusion (including your critical analysis). Attention must be paid to proper grammar, punctuation and paragraph usage. You can get with me or use the Writing Center to assist you with these matters.
Length: 5 to 7 pages. Double-spaced. Use normal margins and size 11 or 12 font. Title page and works cited page are required, and are not included in the 5 to 7-page requirement. Use MLA format.
Citations: There is no minimum or maximum but the more the better. You must use a proper and consistent MLA format to cite any quotes, direct or indirect, or other tidbit that is not common knowledge. You can ask me or the people in the Writing Center if you are in doubt. If youre not sure, you are better off citing something than committing plagiarism.
Works Cited: I do want a works cited used on a separate page at the back of the paper. Make sure you use MLA format. This page is not included in the 5-7-page requirement.
Sources: At least 5. You may use books, periodicals or other library sources. Use caution if you wish to use the Internet. There are a lot of sources up there that should not be used for an academic project. Any site that ends .gov or .edu is likely OK. CNN or MSNBC or any of those can be OK also, depending on what you are using it for, but I want you to go to the original source for the key elements of your argument. If you are unsure if you can use a web site, ask me. If it is not an appropriate source and I did not give you the OK to use it, I will not count it as a source.
