Abnormal behavior is a consistently popular subject for feature films; practically every disorder ever discovered has been portrayed at one time or another. For this assignment, students will write a paper analyzing a character’s illness in terms of the theoretical perspectives (e.g., biological, social, cultural) presented in the text or other sources. Students should include in their paper a description of the character’s diagnosis in terms of the DSM 5 and a discussion of which perspective of mental illness best explains the development of the character’s symptoms. If applicable, students should describe any treatment received by the character and also comment on whether you would recommend a similar or a different treatment based on the best perspective chosen.
Paper must be written in APA format (e.g. title page and references); however NO abstract is needed. A good paper typically has approximately 3000-4000 words, but ensure all questions are covered.

Clarity of the Paper/Writing: 10 marks
1. Summary of the Story (8 marks): A good summary should include clinically related contents from the movie; ensure that you cite the source of the movie in the first sentence in APA format author or producer or director & year for mark.
2. Description of the Characters Symptoms and Disorder Based on DSM 5 criteria (25 marks): List the symptoms the character is experiencing and explain with ample examples. Symptoms must be organized into meaningful diagnoses and those that do not fall within the diagnosis are explained. Description of the clinical features of the diagnoses are presented in relation to the character, based on the DSM with a proper citation. You need to demonstrate that the character meets all of the required criterion for diagnosis. It is recommended that you focus on one disorder for the purpose of the paper.
3. Theoretical Perspectives of the Identified Disorder (15 marks): Identify three possible perspectives regarding the etiology of the disorder within the character. For example, biological, learning, emotional, cognitive, social, or cultural, etc. Each perspective will be worth 5 marks. You may choose the textbook and/or other reliable sources but only with citations of source, but every perspective should have proper citations. For full marks, remember that you will need to relate the perspective to the character as well.
4. The Best Perspective that can Explain the Development of Symptoms (2 marks): In this section you will write why you considered this as the best perspective among the above 3 perspectives, however avoid writing this in the first person. The best perspective must be chosen from what is presented above. Repeat the citation in this separate section.
5. Treatments Received by the Character and Its Effectiveness (5 & 6 will have 20 marks total): Note: Only if treatment is presented in the movie. If presented in the movie, do you agree with this treatment, why? Your response must be backed up by research: either through information in the textbook or by a research article. If no treatment is seen, mention that there is no treatment seen in the movie in # 5; then proceed to # 6). Again, avoid writing this section in the first person.
6. Recommendation of Other Treatment: Even if a treatment is seen in the movie, you must still recommend two additional treatments, but with basis. E.g., why do you claim that another treatment will work better? If there was no treatment presented in the movie, you must make a recommendation for treatment in this section. Any recommendation should match with the best perspective you have chosen from the list of perspectives and with cited research evidence, unless you have rationale to go in another direction; a treatment plan should have a cited theoretical basis. E.g. if you choose biological model as the best perspective, there must be treatment recommendations to manage biological related factors. What kind of specific treatments are you recommending under a particular approach and for what purpose? E.g. a particular medication to manage ___ symptoms. These treatments need to be supported by peer-reviewed references.
7. Prognosis: Generally and Based on the Characters Strengths & Weaknesses (10 marks): What are the strengths and problems of the character that might predict the effectiveness or failure of the treatment in the long run? Do you think that the treatment will be effective in the long run? Why or why not? Back up by current knowledge. E.g., is there a generally positive prognosis of that particular disorder in the real-world?
