Hello once again. Whenever we troubleshoot the network, we must first make sure the Wi-Fi is turned on and the airplane mode is off. Check all wire connections and have any tools available. Networking tools include crimpers, multimeter, cable tester, probe, stripper, loopback plug, and punch-down tool. Network issues can be problematic if you do not know the signs. They can be limited connectivity, intermittence, SSID not found, and unavailable resources.

There are different measures to check connectivity. We can run commands like ipconfig for the network adapters, ping, tracert/traceroute, and Nslookup. IP config will let us view the subnet mask, IP address, and default gateway configuration. Ping is used to reply or request packets to and from the host.

In Windows 10, we can check or troubleshoot the network by:

  • We will start by using the Network troubleshooter. Select Start > Settings > Network and internet > Status. Now you would change your network settings by selecting Network troubleshooter. Make sure the Wi-Fi is on and then select start > Settings > Network and Internet > Wi-Fi. When you see your available network > click connect.

In windows 11

  • The process is primarily the same. Select Start > Settings > Network and Internet and then turn on your Wi-Fi. Now select More options > verify your network and connect.

Sometimes when there is no connection to the Wi-Fi, you can either unplug the router and modem, wait at least a minute to reset the network or press the reset button. Make sure all devices are on and not in airplane mode. You can run command tracert   to see if the connection is bad on your end or the provider.

Good Evening,

Before planning on how to improve the network I would first find out how the current network is operating and what kind of hardware is being used. It would be a good idea for the landlord to improve this network in a way that will accommodate the projected network traffic needs in 7-8 years from now so that they do not need to continuously upgrade the network every year or two.

For starters, I would check the speeds that the current physical connection is providing. Ethernet cable is limited in speeds and distance. Upgrading to fiber optic cable where possible and implementing a main distribution frame and intermediate distribution frames that are connected by fiber optic would greatly increase speeds.

Next, I would assess the areas that are having a slower wireless connection or having trouble keeping a reliable speed. Deciding where to have wireless access points will depend greatly on the layout of the apartment complex, a high-rise style building will have a different distribution of access points than a single floor type lay out. I would recommend moving or adding new wireless access points that will be connected to the intermediate distribution frames with ethernet cable.

Depending on the scope of the project being presented, the landlord could use either 2 or 4 intermediate distribution frames. With the latter option, each frame would only be supporting 12 or 13 units. The landlord should also consider giving each unit their own wireless access point along with common areas or one access point per 2 units.

"QoS is used to manage contention for network resources for a better end-user experience."(Lammle, 2020) Since the residents are likely using applications that need to perform in real time, Quality of Service would be perfect to implement in addition to the other changes. Controlling the flow of data based on delay, dropped packets, error, jitter, or out-of-order delivery can increase the speeds experienced by the users.
