Aesthetic Statement (750 – 1000 words)

As we discuss in Week Fourteen’s Overview, an Aesthetic Statement (or an Artist Statement, or a Poetics Statement, or. . .) is your opportunity to tell your readers why you do what you, and why it matters.  There are no formal formatting requirements for this assignment.  But here are things I’m looking for:

  • Evidence of engagement with Seller’s text and her presentation of the elements of writing (Images, Energy, Tension, Pattern, Insight);
  • Evidence of engagement with contemporary fiction (referencing the stories I provided in our early modules, stories in the Pushcart Prize Collection, and whoever else you’re reading;
  • A connection between your work and contemporary fiction;
  • A Discussion of what’s important to you in fiction.

To help inform the process, I strongly recommend you read interviews with other writers (the five I posted in our Week Fourteen Overview are a good start, but also google “The-Name-Of-The-Author-You-Love” + “on writing” (or “interview”).
