The Affordable Care Act’s major milestone is the affordability of healthcare to all and free preventive care services. This act would generally lessen the burden of some Americans and even some immigrants living in the US. This health care can deliver better services because the government has a strong partnership with other stakeholders to give better treatment in the retrospective of their economic status, race, and nationality. Also, nurses are an essential part of the healthcare industry and are respected by the public; they can make meaningful contributions toward health care reform through advocating for clients and families. The signing of the 2010 health care bill by President Obama, after many years of controversial attempts at health care reform, provides an excellent opportunity for nurses to advocate for tying health care for all to ethics and social justice(Lancaster, 2020, p135). The reasons why this act has been considered a long and protracted political battle is seen as a national safety net program for the low-income bracket, but as a program that has become too expensive and threatens the stability of future federal and state budgets. The issue of some politicians, especially The tea party movement, claimed that there could be excessive taxes healthcare would prove too costly for some Americans and constitute government takeover of healthcare.

The Patient Protection an Affordable Care Act (also Obamacare or Affordable Care Act [ACA]), is a US federal law that was enacted by the 111TH US congress. President Barack Obama signed ACA into law on March 23, 2010. ACA and the 2010 amendment of the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act are the US healthcare system’s greatest regulatory overhaul and healthcare coverage since the 1995 Medicare and Medicaid passage. Its major provisions took off in 2014, marked with an increased insurance coverage. The law established comprehensive health insurance reforms that were incrementally operationalized over a 4 year sting and beyond. On March 23, 2010, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act. Healthcare reform was a major topic for debate during the 2008-10 presidential campaign, and President Obama promised to fix the US healthcare system of elected to be president. The law puts in place comprehensive health insurance reforms that will roll out over 4 years and beyond, starting from 2010 (Institute of Medicine, August 27, 2014).

For instance, between 2010 and 2013, it was reported that ACA possible prevented an estimated 50000 preventable patient deaths. Additionally, the Medicaid expansion programme has also resulted to reduced mortality rates within states that have adopted it. Other impacts include increased post-discharge mortality for patients hospitalized for pneumonia and heart failure, decreased emergency department and hospital use by the uninsured and advanced-stage breast cancer incidences, and general reduction in mortality. Thus, ACA has significantly helped in better or quality health care services delivery. It has expanded healthcare coverage to over 20 million Americans, saving thousands of lives in the process. It also eliminated patient cost sharing for high-value preventive services and protects individuals with preexisting health conditions. It offers all Americans an improved healthcare coverage access via a robust and expanded Medicaid program, and affordable health insurance, marketplaces for quality, and new Affordable Insurance Exchanges.
C) Explain the reasons why this act has been considered a long and protracted political battle.
ACA faced strong political opposition, both before and after its enactment, especially due to several legal challenges, calls for repeal and major technical problems during its rollout in 2013. It also followed several long and unsuccessful series of attempts by the Republican Party to pass major insurance reforms. The basis for reforms was limited to flexible spending accounts, medical savings accounts of 1996, or health savings accounts (2003). Although these innovations significantly improve the insurance options, they do not materially expand insurance coverage.
