Task 1 Airport XYZ provides both international and domestic flights. Both require security screening. This involves a number of different tasks. There are currently three groups on the roster, A, B, and C. Each group consists of 40 people, who work a roster of 6 days on, followed by 3 days off. The main tasks are: x-ray screening of hand luggage – loading (helping passengers put bags in trays to load into x-ray machine) x-ray screening of hand luggage – screening (monitoring the x-ray screen to detect prohibited items in bags, and searching bags where necessary) x-ray screening of hand luggage – offloading (helping passengers collect their bags after x-ray screening) wanding (screening) of passengers for prohibited items, screening of airport workers entering restricted areas, x-ray screening of hold luggage and cargo, foot patrols of airport areas, vehicle patrols, and/or escorting vehicles airside At this airport, security services for flight security are required continuously from 3am each morning until the last flight leaves at 9pm each night. However, night shifts are required for aerodrome security, which operates 24 hours a day. The current shift pattern for all staff is as follows: Days 1, 2, 3: early Days 4, 5, 6: late Days 7, 8, 9: off duty Early shifts start between 3am and 7.30am. For example, Staff member 1 may start at 4am today, 7.30 am tomorrow, and 5am the next day. Staff member 2 may start at 3am today, 6am tomorrow and 5 am the next day. Late shifts start between 8am and 1pm. Each shift is 8 hours (full time). Within every 3-month period, each security officer must be rostered for six night shifts from 9pm till 5am. These do not have to be consecutive. Using the literature on shiftwork and fatigue, analyze the roster for aviation security staff, describe its effects on fatigue, and make recommendations for improvement. Your answer should take into account the requirements of the role, including the hours that security staff are required, safety aspects, and staff satisfaction and wellbeing. Task 2 Cabin and flight crew for Airline TT have an airside ready room. The entrance is via the baggage make-up area, which is a large airside area where bags are sorted and loaded onto trolleys ready to go on the correct flight. Airline staff walk across the operational baggage make-up floor to get to their ready room, as this is the fastest and most direct route. In this area there are tugs (some diesel and some electric) and trolleys, conveyor belts, and baggage handling staff at work. The area is cold, noisy and lighting is low. There is a designated walkway around the edge of this area, so staff can safety access the ready room; however, this takes twice as long, and airline staff do not use it. They complain that they have walked across the operational area for years and are aware of the risks, there is no record of any injury from doing so, and that other airport workers do it all the time. a. Explain the human factors considerations for airline staff crossing the operational baggage make-up area. b. Explain the human factors considerations for changing the behavior so that staff choose to use the longer route around the safe walkway. What are the issues and how might they be overcome? c. Using the pillars of SMS as your structure, detail how you might change the behavior so that staff use the longer route. Task 3 As an airline HF specialist, you are asked what should be done to ensure your airline minimizes the chance of an incident like the 2015 Germanwings one, where a mentally ill pilot deliberately crashes an aircraft. Explain and evaluate the options for your airline regarding a. mental health and b. cockpit entry/exit procedures, and their potential outcomes. Task 4 Your airline is about to develop a new flight safety briefing and has asked for your guidance. Explain how the message could best be imparted so that passengers understand and retain the message, justify your recommendations, and provide a draft for the briefing (it does not have to be a video briefing).
