I will consider reviewing a book by the late Dr. Stephen R. Covey. This author is well known to be a manager and a teacher. The name of the book is “7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” Dr. Stephen has been successful in his career and managed to receive several awards such as The National Fatherhood Award, International Man of Peace awards, and Lifetime Achievement awards of being the best entrepreneur of the year among others. The content in the book has been resourceful to managers and any other leader out there. The book has been successful in transforming the perception of individuals on leadership and has ensured the improvement of their attributes. The book has served several organizations and has been a subject of reference in several boardrooms, discussions, and meetings. The book has been resourceful in several training programs, and managers have always recommended it for its perfect approach to leadership. The content in the book adds up on being a successful manager.
One of the fascinating features in the book, which drew my attention, is its ability to relate to leaders in diverse ways. The book describes different values for different leaders and offers relevant information on how each leader can come out to be resourcefully at his place of work and the ways that he or she can be of motivation to his team members. Dr. Stephen writes this book out of his improvements and is influenced by his surroundings. Most of the information in the book is from his experiences, either what he has gone through or what he has watched happening around him, which concerns leadership. He speaks about his working and living environment and he goes further talking about is professional and personal traits and habits as a leader.
The books bring out both good and bad leadership habits clearly for the reader. The descriptions in the book are vivid and extensive to explain and comprehend. The description in the book invokes an individual to work on his or her strengths and good attributes in leadership. It offers a standard measure to determine both weaknesses and strengths in leadership. It acts as a tool that can be used to identify mistakes, come up with proper strategies for change, and boost up an individual’s ability to do better. This book offer guidance on a leader through certain important tools, which include:
Making strategic, smart, and better decisions whenever there are challenges and situations to overcome.
Overcoming wrong habits that can lead to failure.
Having full control of an individual’s life.
Boosting personal productivity in life and at workplaces.
Improving and managing the status of relationships with colleagues, friends, and family.
Living happy and satisfied with personal roles and activities.
Finding and building a healthy life and work balance.
Seven different habits describe a successful man, which are explained by Dr. Stephen in his book include:
Being proactive: An individual is fully responsible for his or her life. Being proactive is the most difficult habit that an individual can develop. However, it is a value that allows on to be successful as a leader.
Setting the right priorities: A successful leader should set the right priorities in his life. Setting the first thing to be first will enable an individual to know when to act, where to act, and how to act (Covey, 1989). Priorities are important to ensure that individual cuts out the unnecessary things out to allow him or her work out the most important things out.
Beginning with the end in mine: Dr. Stephen describes that a successful individual should begin with setting the right goals and ensure that he or she leads himself or herself to meet the set objectives. A good leader anticipates for problems, challenges, and obstacles and sets out the right strategies to deal with any problems whenever they come up. This is some of the important aspect of life that an individual needs to undertake at the beginning of having full control of his or her own life. The aspects allow an individual to meet his or her goals quickly.
Having a winning mentality: the habits stated above builds up an individual on understanding and being able to manage and improve oneself towards developing an individual or a team vision for success. It makes an individual devote his or her habits to using and creating a victory for his team (Covey, 1989). It allows a leader to incorporate his or her good habits in the right way at work and management of the team members. Having a winning mentally give leaders the ability to create opportunities that would lead to success. It ensures that there are appropriate risk-taking and proper strategies that guarantee success.
Seeking to understand and to be understood: The author presents the importance of listening and doing the best to develop a sense of understanding and on the team members. A leader should give the team members the chance to express their thoughts and feelings and should always be ready to listen to them and act accordingly to their suggestions (Covey, 1989). This attributes the team members have the confidence to contribute and participate in attaining the best and possible solution.
Sharpening the saw: this habit assists and encourages in the growth of all other aspects described in the book through their application. According to Dr. Stephen, a leader needs self-renewal and faith to ensure, that he or she brings a positive change at all times.
Synergizing: According to Dr. Stephen, the whole is precious than the parts. A leader should develop a common understanding of other people’s contributions. The ideas and suggestions of other people are essential in ensuring that a complete and creative solution is met.
This book is resourceful and efficient in bringing up a successful leader.
