Now that you have chosen specialization and a Field, you will need to create the application materials that are most relevant to the position that you’re most interested in investigating. How you create these materials will be dependent upon your Field and career interests.

There are three parts to the Application Materials: the cover letter, the resume/CV, and the thank you letter. The positions that you apply for should be ones that are real and currently available with organizations that you have an interest in, so you will need to look at relevant job sites to get a clear idea of what is available and what you can expect.

Your application materials should be tailored specifically to the positions and organizations which you have the most interest in. For the resume and cover letter, you are welcome to invent qualifications if you like, but all of the other information you include should be accurate. You may choose whatever form of resume or CV you think will work best given your qualifications and the position you want.

Your cover letter must be a minimum of three full paragraphs long, and should express your interests in applying for the position.

You will write the thank you letter in the context that you have already interviewed with the organization in question and are thanking them for that interview. Both the cover letter and the thank you letter should follow full business letter format.

This assignment is worth 100 points.

Field Specifics:

Entrepreneurs: For this assignment, you’ll need to determine what sort of applications you will be creating. Because you are going to be planning your own business, you won’t need to create a job application. Instead, you may create application materials for licenses or permits, SBA or bank loans, government contracts, etc. The materials that are needed for applications like these are very similar to job applications: they’ll require lists of qualifications, contact information, a cover letter, etc.

Nonprofits: For this assignment, you’ll need to determine which nonprofit institutions you are most interested in. These could include academic institutions such as schools, universities, museums, and think tanks, nongovernmental advocacy organizations, and governmental and international institutions and organizations.

Creatives: For this assignment, you’ll need to determine what type of creative work you are going to apply for. This could mean responding to a call for proposals, a call for auditions, etc., or could mean applying for a creative position at a regular business, a nonprofit organization, an entertainment organization, an academic institution, etc.

Professionals: For this assignment, you’ll need to determine a specific position at a specific organization to apply for. Remember that you don’t have to think locally—if you’re interested in a position at a particular location, even if it’s international, create the application materials for that position, even if that position is as a research scientist at McMurdo station in Antarctica.

      • Details of your work in the position, including responsibilities, skills, achievements, etc.
      • Major projects, awards, etc.
    • Other relevant information: skills, languages, etc.
