How is it like “Scared Straight”?

2. Discuss Michelangelo’s Pieta, contrasting it with the Late Gothic Rottgen Pieta. How does Michelangelo’s sculpture embody Renaissance qualities? What about it shows the influence of ancient Greece? How do we see Christian subject matter and storytelling? How can we see naturalism and Humanism in Michelangelo’s sculpture?

3. Discuss Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s David and Caravaggio’s The Calling of Saint Matthew. What makes these examples of Baroque art? How is Bernini’s David different from Donatello and Michelangelo’s Renaissance Davids? How is Caravaggio’s painting different from Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper? How does the message in Caravaggio’s painting relate to the Catholic Counter-Reformation?

4. Compare and contrast Jean-Honore Fragonard’s The Swing and Jacques-Louis David’s Oath of the Horatii. What makes one artwork Rococo and the other Neoclassical? How does the Rococo piece embody aristocratic pleasure and why is that still controversial and looked down upon? How does the Neoclassical artwork react against the style and attitude of the Rococo one? How does the Neoclassical piece, in its subject matter and composition, express Enlightenment values? What does it communicate about the French Revolution?

5. Discuss JMW Turner’s The Slave Ship. What makes this Romantic art? What is the Sublime in nature and what does it communicate? What act is being shown and how can we see Turner’s emotional response to and judgment of that act? How does Caspar David Friedrich use scale to give viewers a sense of the Sublime in Monk by the Sea?

Finally, add a short reflection. Which artworks were your favorite to learn about and why? They can be from any point in the semester or you can choose the artwork you presented on.
