Your second short essay assignment (1500 words maximum) is to assess the positions of Spain and Morocco in the world system. Is Spain a peripheral, semi-peripheral , or a core state? What about Morocco? Take a position and support your case with evidence, that is, convince me that your position is correct. There is no right answer to this question; there are only good arguments. Good arguments are logical, well presented, coherent, and well supported with evidence. The more evidence you have, the easier it will be to make a good argument. Look at GDP per capita, heath statistics, education levels, inequality, poverty measures, military capabilities, membership in international institutions, etc. Start with the criteria, the definition of core, periphery, and semi-periphery and then build a case for where Spain and Morocco each fall in the world system. A good strategy is to compare Spain and Morocco to a country that is clearly a core country such as Japan, and to one that is clearly a peripheral country, such as Guatemala or Burkina Faso.
When using statistics, it is good to give your reader some kind of context in which to understand the number. If you tell us that the poverty rate is 14%, we have no way of knowing whether this is good or bad, very high or very low. So tell us that the poverty rate is 14% which is lower than most countries in the world, or is comparable to the average of Latin America.
Let the data speak for itself. Business reports and forecasts are a bad source of information for this exercise because these reports are focused on very short term trends. A countrys position in the world system is dependent not upon short term trends but very long term trends. So Greece, for example, has had an economic crisis over the last couple of years, but a short term economic crisis does not determine a countrys standing in the world system. Use the data on GDP per capita, health, and education to determine a countrys position in the world system.
Important: Please note that GDP or GNI is only significant for measuring well-being when it is measured on a per capita basis, meaning per person. China has the second largest economy in the world measured in gross GDP, but it also has the largest population in the world and so the output per person is relatively small. China is ranked 2nd in the world in gross GDP and 113th in the world in terms of per capita income, quite a difference. The gross GDP or GNI has little relevance for development achievement; it is the per capita figure that shows us how people are doing.
