Throughout the semester we discussed how various concepts such as minority or race or ethnicity are socially constructed. We learned that minority status is politically, socially, and economically shaped. Though minority status may be fluid (e.g. official status as a minority for a group may change), we saw that negative outcomes or marginal and unequal status we often associate with being a so-called minority has endured for some groups, illustrated by a number of continuing inequities (in education, labor participation, wealth, health, or the criminal justice system).
1. Using examples from the SECOND half of the semester, discuss how negative outcomes and/or low status may endure and appear permanent for some groups by considering examples of inequities we studied in the SECOND half of the semester. Provide examples – from TWO different areas (i.e., education, labor participation, wealth, health, or the criminal justice system).
2. Choose one of the examples you discuss above and provide a sociological explanation for the disparity. Discuss how a negative outcome or low status is not the result of something natural or biological (and therefore not permanent) but is instead the result of particular political, economic, and/or social processes. Be sure to incorporate the readings and lecture materials.
Answer should be around 2 pages (800 to 1000 words) in length.
