Answer each question in essay form writing about 150 words or a little over half a page. (Longer is fine; shorter is not.)
Essays should be formatted like small papers with Times New Roman font, size 12, double spaced.

1. Discuss how the Akkadian Stele of Naram-Sin and the Egyptian sculpture, Khafre Enthroned, function as propaganda. In other words: how does each statue idealize the ruler, presenting him as excellent, perfect or virtuous, and beyond destruction?

2. Discuss iconism and aniconism in the following artworks: Shiva and Parvati Sculpture (made in the twelfth century in Orissa, India), Detail from the Enlightenment Face of Prasenajit Pillar (from Bharhut, Madya Pradesh, India, c. 100-80 BCE) and interior designs from the Dome of the Rock (made in Jerusalem in 691 CE). What religious traditions do these artworks represent? How does each artwork portray or evoke the divine and why? (All relevant slides are in the “Islamic and South Asian Art” Powerpoint presentation).

3. Compare and contrast the presentation of authority in the Roman statue, Augustus of Primaporta and the Byzantine mosaic at San Vitale, Justinian and His Attendants. (Don’t do the apse mosaic with Christ in the middle!) How does each emperor show that he has political, military and even divine or religious authority? How do Augustus and Justinian draw on different religions to make their points?  How do the artworks differ in style?

4. Discuss three radically different portrayals of femininity in Venus of Willendorf (c. 24,000 BCE), Guanyin, Bodhisattva of Compassion (Song Dynasty, twelfth century CE) and Lady Xook on lintels 24 and 25 at Yaxchilan (709 CE). What qualities or attributes are emphasized in each female figure and how can you tell? How do these figures represent important concerns of the societies that produced them? What do their cultures seem to value?

5. Contrast the messages of the Lapith vs. Centaur metopes on The Parthenon and the relief sculpture, The Last Judgment Tympanum on the Church of Saint-Lazare in Autun, France. In other words: how do the Parthenon metopes showcase the ancient Greek values of reason and restraint? How does the Saint-Lazare tympanum emphasize the Western medieval values of religious obedience and submission?
