Writea personal reflection paper explaining how what you have learned in class thissemester changes the way that you read or will read in the future. In other words, explain what you have learnedthis semester. In your writing, try to avoid general terms (“I read more critically,””I notice the relationship between form and content more,” “Ithink more about gender,” etc). Your explanation will be a lot clearer andmore persuasive if you can illustrate it with specific examples.
Theformat is up to you. All that I ask is that you are thoughtful and clear.
Thingsthat you might want to do:
– Describe your initial impressions ofa literary text we read this semester, and explain how the various theoreticaltexts that we read this semester made you see it differently, and then linkthat more broadly to other changes in how you understand literature.
– Talk about how one of thetheoretical works we read seemed confusing at first, and explain how it startedto make sense to you, how it came to seem applicable to things we read inclass, and then to other things in the world.
– You could talk about how a contrastbetween some of the texts that we read changed your perspective on a givenissue, or how the work we did this semester led to you developing strategiesfor reading texts.
– You could reflect on the usefulnessor desirability of theory or various kinds of theory for literary studies.
Thingsyou should try to avoid:
– Repeating things we said in class,explaining the theory to me. Save that for the exam. Here I want to learn aboutyour thoughts, not mine.
– Summarizing the course or thevarious theories we learned. Again, I do not want to read “thematerial” but the way it has affected you and your thinking.
These are just some examples of how you might approach thisquestion but it really is completely up to you. The idea is just to reflecton what you learned (or if you didn’t learn anything, why not?) in a thoughtfulway.
