For this post, you will write a short essay comparing the mosaic of Christ, San Vitale, Ecclesius, and Angels from the Church of San Vitale in Ravenna, Italy and the Shaka Triad statue from Horyu-ji Temple in Japan. Images of the artworks to compare are available below and in Week 2 PowerPoint 3 (Early Christian and Byzantine Art) and Week 3 PowerPoint 2 (Early Buddhist Art in South Asia, China, and Japan). This assignment is intended to help you develop your ability to notice the connections between artworks from different time periods and/or cultures.
STEP ONE:
There is an example comparison essay posted to the Week 3 folder on Blackboard. You should read through it, paying attention to how the author began the essay by discussing the main theme of the comparison before moving on to a detailed discussion of the similarities and differences of the two artworks.
STEP TWO:
Write your comparison essay. First, fully identify the two works, including the title, location and dates. Then, compare and contrast the two artworks in terms of their visual and technical qualities and historical context. Your essay should be at least 300 words.
You should start your essay by briefly discussing the main theme of the comparison. Then you can move on to comparing the artworks. When writing the essay, do not simply list what you see in one artwork and then the other. Rather, consider the two works in relation to each other and focus on their similarities and differences. There are many different aspects of the artworks that you can consider, including the subject matter, medium, style, composition, function, and historical context.
