Case 1

Gregor

Gregor is 56 years old, married, and has three grown children. He is a member of the faith community and was more active when his children were young. He works full time. In the past year, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and had surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Gregor continues to have scans periodically. He also continues to have difficulty with incontinence, which forces him to work mostly from home and limits his social activity. His wife is his primary source of support and tells the nurse that she worries that Gregor is slipping into a depression.

Case 2

Alicia

Alicia is a 74-year-old breast cancer survivor of 14 years. She was never married and lives alone in a townhome with many stairs. She is being hospitalized with pneumonia, which has led to a diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer to the lung. Alicia is concerned about many things— decisions about further treatment, possibly moving, fears about living alone when she is sick, and fears of the future. She is an active member of her faith community and has been a volunteer for some of the health and wellness activities.

Case 3

Gloria

Gloria is 68 years old and married, has five grown children, and is an active member of the faith community. She and her husband are both retired and have particularly enjoyed going on mission trips and participating in small group Bible studies. Gloria recently had knee replacement surgery and her recovery has been slower than expected. This has limited her ability to participate in her regular activities and she has grown impatient and frustrated.
