Assignment 2

General Requirements: You need to read and understand the material in Chapters 1 & 2in the online text and the SPSSSkill Guide for Frequencies. Your assignment will be graded on thebasis of (1) the output file (.spv) from SPSS and (2) your interpretation andwrite-up of the frequency analysis.

Accessing SPSS: See the Purchasing SPSSdocument in Materials to Begin the Courseat our course Home Page for information about accessing SPSS on campus orpurchasing a GradPack version of SPSS.

The Data File: You will use the SPSS data file FearXX.sav (the XXstands for the unique number assigned to you) that was sent to you when youcompleted Assignment #1. This file contains data from a fear surveyadministered to male and female students at Purdue University Calumet. Thequestions on the survey ask How afraid are you of followed by 30 things orevents that people fear. Your data file contains the ratings of these items aswell as an identification number, demographic data (age, sex, etc.) and scoresfrom three additional measures related to fear and gender role. The Fear Survey Coding Sheet contains descriptionsof the variables in this data file and can be downloaded from our D2L site. Thecoding sheet is provided for informational purposes only and is notneeded to do the assignment. The data file “GSS93 subset.sav” used inthe SPSS Skill Guide for Frequenciescan also be downloaded. You can use this data file to practice alongwith the instructions in the Skill Guide.Do not use “GSS93 subset.sav” for your actual assignment.

To Complete The Assignment:

<1>Using your “FearXX.sav” data file and following the general procedurefrom the Skill Guide,generate a frequency table in the SPSS Viewer for the variable: usrg1 (fear of having a surgicaloperation). Although the data for usrg1are technically ordinal (ratings/rankings) well assume that they are closeenough to being interval or scale data so that we can generate descriptivestatistics as follows:

Click on Analyze > Descriptive Statistics > Frequencies.

Select the usrg1 variable using theprocedure described in the Skill Guide.

WARNING: There is another variable in your FearXX.savfile that contains data involving fear of witnessingsurgical operations (surg1). Do NOT use this variable!

Click on Statistics. Select Mean, Median, Mode, Std. deviation, Minimum and Maximum. Thenclick on Continue.

After generating the frequencies and descriptives output, create a bar graphfor the frequency of responses to the response categories for usrg1. Use theprocedure in the Skill Guidefor Frequencies.

<2>Name and save this output (.spv) to the desktop or a folder in your computer.Name the file using your last name, first initial, and A2(for Assignment 2). For example –JonesJA2 (.spv will be added automatically by SPSS). The output should contain:

(a) A frequency distribution of the fear ratings for the variable(usrg1);

(b) Descriptive statistics for the variable (usrg1); and

(c) A bar graph showing the frequency (vertical axis) for eachrating category (horizontal axis).

<3>Examine the frequency distribution, the bar graph and the statistics in youroutput. Using the text editor in the Comments box in the Submit Assignmentsection, write three or four sentences in general terms indicating whatthe distribution of scores for usrg1 tells you about how much people are afraidof having a surgical operation. Did the outcome surprise you? Did the graphhelp with your interpretation? How? Don’t include a lot of numbers –they are already presented in your output. If you prefer, you may upload yourwrite up as a Word document.

<4> Uploadyour SPSS output (.spv) file.

 <5> Click [Submit].
