Description
View the slides on Traditional Literature and choose a children’s picture  book or illustrated book in the that fulfills one of the forms of traditional literature identified in the slides. This can be an updated version of a classic tale or a new edition of an anthology (if you choose nursery rhymes, make sure to choose a full collection). Complete the prompts for the Book Reflection in a word processing document and submit as a Word document or PDF. Make sure that the book chosen tells a story. APA Works Cited information for the book (1 point) What type of traditional literature does this book represent? (1 point) What are the features of the book that indicate the type? (2 points) What are some of the values represented in the text (use specific examples to support the values)? (3 points) Provide a brief review of the book, including your level of familiarity with the text or any adaptations with which you’re familiar. Consider the messages the text sends children in its text and illustrations. (3 points) You will be graded on your level of accuracy and detail, including your application of information from the week’s slides. I have attached the slides for this week’s lecture make sure to align the book reflection with things from the PowerPoint slides.

Traditional Literature

What is traditional literature?

 Literature that has been established and repeated
over time
 Often from the oral tradition
 “Templates” used from generation to generation
 Part of the template is a pattern while part of the
template changes over time and among cultures
 Made of folksongs, nursery rhymes, fables, fairy
tales, myths, legends, etc.

Nursery Rhymes

 Use rhymes, repetition, lyrics and sometimes melody
 Often include features for children to learn like days
of the week, months of the year, numbers, etc.
 Brief stories of lines of nonsense that are highly
memorable

Folktales

 Originated as folksongs
 Generic tale often from the oral tradition
 Includes superstions/remedies/wives tales
 Flat characters who are usually young
 Come in many forms:
 Fools and Innocents – Jack in the Beanstalk
 Porquoi Stories – how and why things happen
 Domestic Stories – The Elves and the Shoemaker
 Human Traits – The Emperor’s New Clothes
 Moral Warnings – Peter and the Wolf; Hansel and Gretel

Fairytales

 A subset of folktales
 Include fantasy
 Supernatural source of good or evil
 Magic mirror in Snow White, sorcery in Sleeping Beauty
 Normally set in a fantasy world
 Clearly defined good and evil characters; some characters
take unusual forms (giants, dwarfs, etc.)
 Follows a complete plot line with a clear problem, rising
action, climax, and resolution
 Use patterns of 3 (people, events, etc.)
 Many have been modified to have a happy ending

Legends

 Classic story set in a specific time and place
 Narrative believed by the story teller and the listener
to have taken place
 May extend what is possible and exaggerate (hyperbolize)
events and actions
 Uses some historical fact in the story
 Details of the story change over time, but the core of the story
(characters, plot, theme) stays the same
 Include the beliefs of a culture

Myths

 A story that explains the world
 Often from a specific cultural and/or religion
 Best explanation of a culture/religion at a specific time
 Derive from reality and explain the world to a particular
culture
 Why are we here
 Who are we
 Why are we living/What is our purpose?
 Characters are often non-human including deities,
supernatural beings or human – heroes
 Setting is in a previous time, usually ancient in a world
with supernatural beings and monsters

Tall Tales

 Use fact and fiction to tell a story often with extreme
exaggeration
 Characters are heroes who demonstrate bravery,
strength, intelligence, and determination beyond
everyone else
 Characters accomplish great and impossible feats
 Familiar places and people make up the story
