Case study Step 1. Overall, If I had to pass over one time, it would be the 20th-century railroading. The main reason for this is the overly extreme work conditions that were evident for all railroad workers (Barak, 2010, P.85). There was a lot of inequality since the railroad owners were receiving a ton of money for railroad their workers were completing (Barak, 2010, P.85). But as a result, they really pushed the works to do insane amounts of work that totaled up to an average of 60 hours per week (Barak, 2010, P.85). Not only that but on the days that the workers had off if they needed supplies or a place to stay; they were required to purchase that from the company (Barak, 2010, P.85). This meant that the money the people were working so hard for was going straight back into the company. The railroad was making money off the wages they were paying their workers which ended up not being all that much (Barak, 2010, P.85). In fact, it was shown that the railroad would always fight attempts to raise the minimum wage of their workers (Barak, 2010, P.85). In the end, it was found that over 500,000 railroad workers either died of exhaustion, or they had to live with permanent crippling or disabilities due to working for the railroad. This goes right back into the statements by Taibi (2011), which talked about how investors that lost money due to mismanagement in the recession were paid back by the money they were invested. But it was a lesser sum than what they invested. This is just an example in the early 20th century that is still evident in different ways today that I personally would want to avoid. It is quite sickening that the railroad made its’ workers fully dependent on them. When thinking about it there was probably no way out either. The railroad camp was always moving, and as a result, the workers had nowhere to go other than the housing that was being provided by the railroad. This meant that even if they wanted to leave, there was no chance because they were most likely stranded far out. I think that furthermore, I would also agree with the statement that the criminal justice system goes after a certain demographic of criminals. While jails are filled nowadays with poor people, and those who aren’t high in the wealth hierarchy, they aren’t the only people who commit crimes. Taibi, (2011) explains how over the years were many scandals in which executives who were prosecuted by the SEC would always get off without being charged. Even if they were charged, it turned into a fine that was nowhere near worth the amount in which they had committed in fraud on Wall Street (Taibi, 2011). A prime example of this was when Al Dunlap was caught for committing fraud and was fined 500,000 dollars (Taibi, 2011). His overall net worth at the time was 100 million, and he was barred from ever running a public company again. But this means that he was only fined 1/200 of his entire net worth for his fraud and was able to live off of a cool 95million dollars for the rest of his life without ever serving time in jail. This really portrays the idea that rich people do not fit into the demographic for people that go to jail. It appears they can simply just pay their way out of the crimes they commit. While the money that they pay is a lot for some people, it is not to scale for money that the executives have. It appears the criminal justice system just jails people that are poor. For example, there is a private probation system that fines poor people massive amounts of money. Someone could be pulled over for a 30-dollar headlight ticket, but if they cannot pay it; that ticket gets an additional 30 dollars on top of it every month that puts the person on a payment plan probation (Brave New Films, 2015). But this also works in favor of the probation office because the fines that get added to the ticket must be paid before you can get credit for paying the ticket (Brave New Films, 2015). So even if you pay 40 dollars in fines, you still may not have a dime taken off the price of the actual ticket and will continue to accrue fines for not making that payment. Laws like the one in Georgia allow the probation in counties to be delegated to the people in the counties (Brave New Films, 2015). This allows private probation offices to open for profit and send people to jail for a long amount of time; as well as cash in on the poor who cannot pay the tickets or the fines for long amounts of time. This is the example that shows that there is a certain group of people who the criminal justice system sends to jail, and it’s not the rich. An apparatus to keep the unruliest and most disruptive as well as the lowest on the rungs of society’s latter in line and to protect the interests of the rich and those in power. Centuries later, four to be exact, as a nation we still operate under a criminal justice system that mirrors those very same practices and concedes those very same concessions to the rich and those in power. Essentially nothing has really changed in what amounts to almost half of a thousand years. In closing to this week’s reflection, I would like to comment on The Rich Get Richer and Poor Get Prison piece by Jeffrey Reiman (2005). In retrospect of what has been taking place in this country for centuries concerning the administration of unequal justice regarding those with resources and influence compared with those without, I completely agree with Mr. Reiman’s assertation on the failure of the criminal justice system. Because it’s a failing system, those with means can benefit from it, and those without get entangled within it. Whether intentional or not, this situation continues to help produce a distinct class of criminals, those without the means to avoid detention. This group tends to be caught in a vicious cycle of recidivism and to be targeted by the apparatus of the powerful. Meanwhile, the rich and powerful continue to invent new ways to exploit this group and make or pay for laws that help further their own wealthy agendas. 2- By your own words.
