Cultural Values in Disney’s Pocahontas Assignment

Chapter 3 highlights the important role of values in understanding cross-cultural interactions. The “Cultural Values in Disney’s (1995) Pocahontas” assignment will require students to examine various intercultural topics in a popular and controversial cartoon. The assignment will give students an opportunity to apply  Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck’s “5 Questions about Cultural groups” and chapter 3’s discussions of various cultural influences on communication in a popular culture context.

Instructions:

1. Read Chapter 3 and the supplemental presentation slides: IC.Chapter3. Culture-1.Communication.Context.and.Culture.pdf  Download IC.Chapter3. Culture-1.Communication.Context.and.Culture.pdf and view the chapter overview.

2. Watch the 1995 Disney cartoon “Pocahontas” (see youtube link below- the full movie is 1 hour and 21 minutes) and answer the questions

3. Answer Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck’s “5 Questions about Cultural groups” for the Native Americans and the Europeans as the groups are portrayed in the film. Explain your answer for each question, for each cultural group, and provide 1 supporting example for each answer and for each cultural group. A  Bullet point format will be accepted for this assignment as long as the answers are complete and well edited.

1. Is Human nature is  perceived as good, evil, and/or some combo?

a) What is human nature to Native Americans in the film?

3. What is the relationship between humans? Some cultural groups value individualism, others are more group oriented

     a) What is the relationship between Native Americans and other Native Americans in the film?

     b) What is the relationship between Europeans and other Europeans in the film?

4. What is the preferred personality? Is the “activity value” doing (often emphasizes productivity), growing, and/or being?

a) What is the preferred personality and “activity value” of Native Americans in the film? 

b) What is the preferred personality and “activity value” of Europeans in the film? 

5. What is the orientation toward time?

a) What is the orientation toward time for Native Americans in the film? (give at least 1 example)

b) What is the orientation toward time for Europeans in the film? (give at least 1 example)

 

4. a) Choose any 3 cultural values (e.g. uncertainty avoidance, power distance, long-term vs. short-term, masculinity/femininity, etc.) discussed in Chapter 3 and b) compare and contrast Europeans and Native Americans (as they are portrayed in the film- not necessarily how they are in real life) in terms of the 3 selected cultural dimensions/values you select.

5. Look up the lyrics for 1 of the songs in the 1995 Disney version of Pocahontas and briefly (in 1-2 sentences) connect an intercultural communication concept to the song lyrics. Suggested songs include (The Virginia Company; Mine, Mine, Mine; Just around the Riverbend; Savages; Colors of the Wind)
