Action Plan

  1. Debrief Notes
    1. What went well
      1. Emphasizing similar values between Tribes and Trust regarding environment and conservation
      2. Energy ~ Passion
      3. Knowledgeability on subject
    2. What could have been better
      1. Organization of slides – common structure throughout
      2. Use of notecards
      3. Rehearsals
  1. What work do you need to do to get to a Draft Proposal in three weeks?
  • Current efforts
    • Knowing the demographic prevails today. 100% stuff and volunteers are white among McKenzie River Trust. The mainstream environmental groups continue to be largely white.(https://www.thesca.org/connect/blog/diversity-conservation)
    • Research results – reached out the database evidence of how important that colored people ‘s contributions are
    • We have already found a way that would make people outside of the Trust’s traditional demographics accept us better

  • Shortcomings
    • Tensions from their history with Oregon
    • Laws: we may not have jurisdiction or access to such areas
    • Environmental Laws?
  • Positives
    • People outside of the Trust’s traditional demographics will care deeply about the environment and demonstrate strong conservation values and practices.
    • More involvement -> more funding, more recognition
    • Less judgment from those outsides of the organization
    • Not only more diversity within Trust, but also attracts more people outside of organization to their services
    • SCA Alumni Council member Christopher Fernández sums it up well, “In many ways the conservation workplace should aim to reflect the biodiversity that exists in nature” (https://www.thesca.org/connect/blog/diversity-conservation)
  • Negatives
    • Complicate already existing matters.
    • People from diverse backgrounds won’t be able to trust that the company has the ability to make any differences.
  • Data
    • Polling those we interview to see their reaction to linking the MRT and Western Native American tribes.
    • Using already secondary research gathered on diversity in ecological groups
    • Library help?
  • Objectives
    • Improve diversity within the MRT by linking the trust with Native American Tribes
  • Solution
    • Improving cultural competency to enable you to work with people who have different backgrounds and becoming more effective by learning from others.
    • Increasing the capacity to recruit and retain staff.
  • Costs
    • JOE
      • Do they already have a department or group for (diversity) outreach?
        • How much would it cost to put one together?
      • Would there be costs associated with meeting with tribes and/or geographic areas of interest to engage in more diverse groups?
    • Technical Plan
      • Determine our expectations of communications and the final product
      • Interviewing clubs, faculty, and local organizations with Native American ties
        • Current knowledge and/or views of Trust
        • What types of projects/outreach would make them interested or comfortable working with Trust?
        • How to get in contact with Tribe(s)
      • If granted, meeting with an actual tribe elder and/or child
        • Current knowledge and/or views of Trust
        • Their relationship with land and water (also do research beforehand)
        • Interested in working with Trust?
        • What types of projects/outreach would make them interested or comfortable working with Trust?
      • Research Trust’s past communications with tribe(s)
        • e. Native Oaks Ridge project
      • Create road map of events that we can schedule with both of them attending
        • For example: Philanthropies,
      • Conclusion
        • Connecting with colored communities and tribes will help those landowners able to access land conservation programs to protect and sustain their land ownership. Besides, with the help of the market economy, those lands will provide more employment opportunities, and increase the revenue from working lands.
        • We may from different regions, countries, but since the outcome that we are hoping would become to the reality is the same – to make the environment a better place to live without having fears of any pollution issues.
