According to “Barriers to Breastfeeding in the United States” there are several barriers that women run into when it comes to breastfeeding. Many women in the United States do not breastfeed because of society, embarrassment from the public, little support from friends and family, lack of knowledge, lactation problems, the women may have unavailable health resources, and the women may need to work, therefore, are unable to breastfeed their babies. Some women do not know when to stop breastfeeding and as a result, they breastfeed for too long or too little. A way that we can increase breastfeeding among women who have little to no knowledge of breastfeeding is by providing more pamphlets, books, and promote speaking with other mothers who breastfeed. Another barrier that women run into is relying on the social norms and bottle feed instead of breastfeeding. Those who have poor social and family support are less likely to breastfeed because they do not have the support they need in order to properly feed the child. If the role of the mother were to do housework and cook and take up other responsibilities, they would feel like they can not breastfeed because they have other things on their plate. Women have been criticized for breastfeeding in public, therefore breastfeeding may lead to embarrassment. A way we can solve this is to make people aware that breastfeeding is natural and incorporate breastfeeding-friendly areas in public spaces.  Some women are unable to lactate, or lactation is painful, thus women turn to formula bottle feeding. Similarly to the household responsibilities, women may have to work and are unable to take longer maternity leaves than others, and have to resort to bottle feeding and hiring a babysitter. A way that we could increase breastfeeding, in this case, is to pump out breast milk and freeze the breast milk to ensure that the baby gets the same nutrients compared to the nutrients that formula could give the baby. Lastly, some women do not have proper health care resources. As a result, women are again, unable to obtain the proper knowledge about breastfeeding that obstetricians and gynecologists are able to provide. If the mother goes to a poorly trained physician or another provider that does not have the correct certifications in an attempt to save money, the women would not receive adequate care. We could help this by having more walk-in clinics that have fully trained health care professionals similar to Planned Parenthood.
