1) Introduce the work by mentioning its title (or name), who made it (if thats known) and how (technique and material). Describe its subject briefly.

Now the meat of the essay:

2) Recap what we know about the objects history (when and where was it made? Where was it supposed to be displayed? Who commissioned it? Etc. etc.)

3) Describe what it looks like (composition, color, narrative, etc. etc.) and how those formal elements contribute to conveying the works meaning. While you are doing this, describe the subject more fully; address the works original context that youve already addressed in #2. Compare and contrast the work to any similar ones weve seen in the course or others that you

come across in your research. What do we learn from that comparison? Note any controversies or uncertainties (is the subject a mystery? Do scholars disagree on anything youve mentioned?)
