INSTRUCTIONS ARE BELOW. I am writing about how the car community is not bad like it all seems. People who like cars and actually keep it on the race track are real car enthusiasts. Cars are also some people escape. I put the instructions first, then some ideas to go off of.

Assignment:  A non-fiction, creatively-written essay that examinesfrom an insiders perspectivewhat its like to

be x–a first generation college student, or a biracial teen in the Inland Empire, or a female basketball player, or

an aspiring jazz musician, or ???.  (Put in other words, you will explain what it is like to be a member of the

subculture/community/group that you are exploring.)  The essay will:

1) Define a particular aspector core componentof your self.

2) Define the culture that this core component represents (or is represented by).

3) Explain how this core component is perceived by those in and outside of this culture/community.

4)  Explain how your identity adheres to or diverges from the perceived conventions of this

culture/group/community.

You will frame the analysis around a specific memory/experience you had that reveals great insight into the culture

to which you belong and which you are examining in your autoethnography.

Some Advice:  Think about a specific, distinctive aspect of yourself and examine how this has shaped you. Not only

will you look at this component and its impact on you specifically, but you will try to draw larger conclusions through

research and analysis about the culture of, for example, aspiring jazz musicians, in general. Then you can take the

analysis to the next level and see how your experience may be typical or atypical or how it may vary from other

peoples understandings of what it is like to be x.

Format: 4-5 FULL pages, MLA style. Review MLA specifics (margins, spacing, typeface, page #, etc.). Papers not in

MLA format will not be accepted

.1) Values- working on cars

2) Respecting all car builds

3) Helping each other when someone’s car is broken

4) Giving each others better prices on car parts.

5) Traditions – Car cruises

6) Halloween trunk or treat for children

7) Christmas toy drives

8) Easter egg hunts with prizes

9) Interests – Driving cars

10) Going on the Track

11) Fixing up cars

12) Activities – Hosting a car meet/ Car show

13) Going to drag strips and racing

14) Fundraisers for those in need

15) Creating a safe environment for people who need it.

I couldn’t pick just one so I will be picking two components as they coincide with each other. I will be speaking on the fundraisers aspect and also the racing aspect. These two are important to be because through the fundraisers we host I feel a sense of accomplishment. Also when I am racing for those 11 seconds you feel nothing but happiness. This is also important to the subculture because people always think that car communities have nothing to offer but trouble no one sees the fundraisers and the work that is put behind them. This is also important because any real car enthusiast knows we don’t race on the streets just for the safety of people, yet the newer generation of car people give us a bad name because they are shown all over the TV with cars flying down the highway.
