I am writing an ethnographic research paper. In a way comparing and contrasting the good we do (fundraising, charity events, etc) vs the bad portrayed in the media (street racing, car accidents) I am writing about how the car community changed me for the better by finding something I love. Instruction will be posted under.
- 3-4 sentences broadly introducing or defining the community (Think of it as a who/what/where/when-type brief rundown.)
- Introduce yourself as the researcher and your subject position in relationship to the community (3-4 sentences).
- Thesis statement
- Background information on the community (this can also look like a brief history of the community).
- Important terms/words or elements of the community that the reader will need to know to understand the rest of the essay.
- Description of the fieldsite (i.e. you include a brief description of the location in which the community/subculture resides, even if it is a digital space).
- Choose one theme/characteristic/idea/tradition/value that surfaced in your research sources and/or your interviews. Write a topic/signpost sentence that explains that theme/characteristic/idea/tradition/value and WHY it is important to the community.
- Include EVIDENCE in the paragraph (i.e. paraphrasing or quoting your sources–and that can include your interviews, or your secondary sources, or both).
- Explain/analyze the evidence by showing why it is important to your definition (or realization) about/of the community (as it is explained in the thesis statement).
- Repeat for all of the body paragraphs.
- This can be one paragraph or two, depending on how much you have to say.
- Reflect on what you have learned about the community by engaging in this research process. What have you learned about yourself? What have you learned about your community?
- You can end by thinking about how you will participate in the community moving forward, or how the community will exist/persist/change in the future, or what you would want to continue to research if you had more time.
