Written Assignment/Project: Case Studies

Please begin will the assigned readings and review the resources provided, including the professional websites. Review the Federal Special Education Law and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act including section 504. Everyone who works with students with exceptionalities is expected to know and understand this important legislation.

Then read these three vignettes and respond to each one using the format provided below:

Candace is the child care administrator of a small private program. She has 6 classrooms that run at about 80% occupancy; they are divided by infants, toddlers, three-year olds, preschool, and a school-age room for the older children in the early morning and afternoon when they are not in school. One day a mother comes in for a tour and likes what she sees. She begins to fill out the registration paperwork, then pauses to mention that her child has Down Syndrome. Candace has never had a child with special needs enrolled in her program, and she is concerned that she doesnt have the training or support to accept this child. What should Candace do?

Mariah is a mom of three school-age children. While her kids are in school, she is looking for a job that will coincide with their hours so she can be home with them. A friend encourages her to apply for a position as a paraprofessional in the school district. After doing a little research, she learns that the paras often work with children who have a wide range of special needs. How can Mariah get started? What does she need to know before she applies for a position in the school?

Demarius has always liked working with kids and over the last decade. He has expanded his after-school program into 3 schools in the city where he lives. The children and families in the community support him, and they have encouraged him to expand his after-school program into a school that serves primarily children with special needs. He knows all the rules and regulations in NY for OCFS-licensed school-age programs, but hes not sure how his program might differ if it was located in a program in a school where most of the children have disabilities. What are some ways the IDEA might apply to him and his new program?

For all of three vignettes, please be sure to cite the readings in your response. Which elements of the Federal Special Education Law, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, section 504 or the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and/or the OCFS Regulations would inform your response? Why?
