When I spent Christmas with my cousins in Indiana, we would wipe off the ice skates and the snow we tracked in with old towels.  When the towels were washed, my aunt would hang them on the clothes line outside.  The wet towels would freeze stiff as a board but in a couple of days could be taken in to use again because they were dry (but still stiff). Why would the towels still be stiff?  What sort of change is this?
