There is a mythology built up in the last 150 years about the cause of the Civil War. A mobile, AL newspaper editor published the first book about the cause of the war in 1875. Southerners wrote the history of this period and historians without a pro-southern bias did not play a significant part in writing the history of this period until the 1950’s. African American historians did offer revisionist history to the "Lost Cause" literature in the early 20th century. But, the mainstream of writing about the Civil War was friendly to the southern cause. The last article you read is written by your textbook author. His article is chosen for the reason that it gives a very good presentation of what happened and what could have been.
As the American Revolution is about today so is a study of the Civil War period.
