Assessment Task 3 – Final essay

Background

While it is important to remain upbeat about humanity’s chances to avoid a climate catastrophe and achieve long-term environmental sustainability, we must also remain conscious of the lack of progress to date. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first Earth Day, the April 2020 issue of National Geographic published two opposing views on the Earth’s futures in 2070. Both of these divergent realities are well argued and substantiated. This task incites students to critically examine these viewpoints in the context of all the material they have come across in this unit and their own further reading, and express their own opinion on humanity’s future progress on the issue of climate change and environmental sustainability more broadly.
