After reading chapter 10 in the Handbook of Coaching Psychology, Conceptualize a client-centered coaching approach. How does the evidence-based coaching research literature support the coaching skills and application of your approach?

2. Answer to the following post.

In a client-centered approach, I would strive to set up an ideal environment that is supportive, empathetic, non-directive, and non-judgmental to allow the client to be able to access their intrinsic motivation. The first step would be to establish an upfront understanding of our coaching relationship to frame expectations of a trusting and safe environment. To acknowledge the human aspects of life, I would insist on clearing any anxious thoughts that might be in the forefront of the clients mind that could distract them from accessing their inner intuitive wisdom. This is most important because coaching is rooted in the philosophy that the client has all of the answers to their challenges within them. As a client is the only person who knows what it is like to experience their experiences from moment to moment, this allows the client to find solutions that align with their authentic desires, even if they don’t verbally reveal all of their thoughts about the issue at hand, leaving room for subtext.  

The content of Chapter 10 Person-centred coaching psychology (Joseph and Bryant-Jeffries 2019) supports this approach as it reflects on the relational structure of ideas generated by Carl Rogers, which highlights the importance of a client-centred approach to allow the client to self-analyze and actualize. The case study shared (Joseph and Bryant-Jeffries 2019, p. 141) showcases how the empathetic support of the coach allows and guides the client to be able to work through ideas and emotions that come up in a non-directive, organic way that elicits transformational thoughts within the moment.  This allows emotions to be worked through without judgment but a self-awareness. When emotions are acknowledged and looked at objectively then they can quickly be addressed and released in order to find actions appropriate for moving forward to reach the client’s goals.
