Post 1:

Integrative Medicine is an approach to wellness that combines mind, body, and spirit to focus on the whole person. Integrative medicine unlike traditional medicine provide an alternate route to healing without being fully reliant on  prescription medicine only. Focus for integrative medicine for the spirit and mind can include: meditation, yoga, body rubs, massages, acupuncture, music, aroma therapy, and hand holding. Integrative medicine for the body can  include changes to diet and nutrition.

In these two segments I learned how America has gotten away from  physicians taking time to listen before pushing a prescription drug. It was very disturbing to hear that it is easier for a physician to write a prescription than to discuss lifestyle changes. Lifestyle changes can decrease doctor visits and emergency visits. I also learned  that the Affordable Care Act has Community Transformation Grants that fund community programs that support lifestyle changes.

I will incorporate Integrative Medicine into every patient that I see. I will push for every patient to  find out what brings peace to their mind and spirit. Since nutrition is a lifestyle change, I will encourage each patient to keep a healthy balance of nutrition and exercise.

Post 2:

Conventional medicine includes drugs, surgery, and lifestyle changes. Complementary medicine are therapies that are not traditional, like yoga, meditation, and acupuncture. Both these combined create Integrative medicine. Integrative medicine is a holistic medical discipline which considers the lifestyle and habits of the person. The Physician works to treat the whole person rather than just the disease. (Grainger) I learned integrative medicine is all inclusive, and never realized how much I use it personally. You can take medications to ease anxiety and depression, but also have an emotional support pet! I have severe anxiety and my dog has been my guardian angel on Earth, yet I also have assistance with a low dose medication and do breathing exercises when I feel an attack coming on! Animal therapy is largely used. Animal therapy can have several goals, and these will determine how it works. The type of therapy and target for this therapy may change, depending on the condition and the type of aid that a person needs. Examples include, providing comfort and reducing levels of stress, improving movement or motor skills, developing social or behavioral skills, and increasing motivation towards activities such as exercise or interacting with others. ( Medi Lexicon International) I really am a big supporter of Integrative medicine because, medications have so many side effects, some life threatening, and surgeries and other invasive procedures can have so many complications. If there is a way to avoid a new medication or procedure, I know as a patient I would want to seek that route. I would incorporate this into my interactions with patients, by first educating them on other treatment methods. I would also never be too pushy about my personal views regarding this type of medicine but encourage my patients to have an open mind.
