Remember the main functions of nonverbal communication:

Supplementing: adding to or enhancing the words you speak or write
Repeating: nonverbally relaying the same message being stated verbally
Contradicting: nonverbally relaying a message with the opposite meaning of the verbal message
Regulating: indicating a desire to continue or stop the conversation
Substituting: communicating without any verbal message at all
Accenting: highlighting one portion or word of a message

Consider how your relationships would be impacted if you could only communicate using verbal communication. What would be missing?
