The purpose of this assignment is to assess students’ beliefs about what causes certain behaviors.  When you are thinking “causes” don’t think about “why” someone might exhibit certain behaviors, but rather what leads some people to be more likely than others to get to the point where they would actually do those actions.

DirectionsFor this assignment, you will explore deviant, criminal and nuisance behaviors. First, you should define deviant behavior and then list 3 different types of deviant, but maybe not criminal behavior. Next, define criminal behavior and list 3 different types of criminal offenses. You should spend time brainstorming a variety of possible causes of criminality before listing them.  Make sure you consider crimes that are low level (i.e., traffic violations) and higher level (i.e., violent) crimes. You can list adult and/or juvenile offenses also. Third, list 3 nuisance behaviors that aren’t criminal (can’t get arrested for it) and what causes people to engage in them.  Note, for each type of behavior, there are 2 parts to the assignment:  defining the behavior and then filling in the table.  The last part of the assignment is to rank the behaviors from the least to most severe in terms of going against norms (what is culturally acceptable).

  1. Define deviant behavior (4 points):

  1. List 3 different types of deviant behaviors (maybe use a mix of ones that are both deviant and criminal).       In the second column, list possible reasons these are seen as deviant:  (6 points)
