Instructions Review the Chapter 3 information on the costs and consequences of victimization (see pages 70-73). Review the concepts related to Critical Criminology and restorative justice that are discussed in Chapter 8. Consider the following scenario from the “Thinking Like a Criminologist” section on page 292 of your text: A student wants to discuss a personal matter. It seems that a few weeks ago, she was at a party when she was sexually assaulted by a fellow student. The attack was quite traumatic, and she suffered both physical and emotional injury. The police were called and the boy was charged with rape. Now that a few weeks have passed, she has been contacted by a local program that bills itself as a restorative treatment program. It seems that her attacker is now a client and wants to engage in some form of reconciliation. At an arranged meeting, he professes his regret for the attack and wishes to make amends. He and the program director have worked out a schedule in which the victim will be compensated for her pain and suffering in the amount of $5,000 in exchange for her agreeing to a recommendation to the prosecutor that the case be treated informally rather than going to trial. She doesn’t know what to do: she needs the money, having missed work after the attack, but at the same time is concerned that people will think she has accepted a bribe to withdraw the charges. Craft an initial post addressing the following questions: According to the latest UCR data website (Links to an external site.) , what was the incidence of rape in the U.S. in 2014? In other words, how many rapes occurred in the U.S. in 2014? Was this an increase or decrease from 2013? From other years? According to Chapter 3 of your textbook, what are the estimated annual economic costs of an individual rape crime to society? Chapter 3 of your textbook identifies individual costs of victimization on pages 67-68. Identify and discuss ONE individual cost the female student who was raped in the scenario above may have experienced. How would you suggest this female student respond to the program director’s proposal in the scenario above? Do you consider the payment a bribe or restitution for an evil deed? What is restorative justice? Can restorative justice be used in a crime such as rape?
