Through viewing the film, Dakota 38+2, and reading a poem by Layli Longsoldier, students will exploring more deeply the challenges many indigenous peoples have experienced in maintaining their own sacred traditions and practices, language, culture and beliefs.

Can you imagine what it would be like to hold an event similar to this one as a part of your own tribal history?

What elements of sacred indigenous belief and practice did you witness as you watched the film, Dakota 38?
While this historic event happened over 200 years, the repercussions, in particular, on Native North American Indians, has been devastating. What might an event like this teach us?
In the film, Jim Miller, one of the tribal leaders, says the ride isn’t about blame, it’s about healing. What do you think he means? If placing blame doesn’t bring healing, what do you think does?
